There’s an old clip from a Michael Douglas movie (War of the Roses) where the character played by Danny Devito says something along the lines of, “when a lawyer who gets X dollars an hour offers you some advice, listen.”

Ok, Mr. Quinn Whipple, CEO of QWK.net… (can that *possibly* be your real name? no matter…) I call it, “Setting yourself on fire in the blogosphere: I don’t recommend it.”

If one of your customers, say – Tiffany Baxendell – lays a brick to your head over a customer service dispute….here are three things you should not do:

1) Send a cease & desist email claiming trademark infringement for someone criticizing you.
2) Send a cease & desist email claiming trademark infringement for someone criticizing you.
3) Send a cease & desist email claiming trademark infringement for someone criticizing you.

Sensing a pattern? Put aside the merits of her beef. Put aside the “ick” factor. And maybe we’ll just focus on your willingness to threaten legal action against a former (happy) customer WHEN THEY TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE NO LONGER A HAPPY CUSTOMER?!

Does that seem like a business anyone would rush to do business with?

But if you insist on doing so…you might want to cover ALL your bases. I’d be happy to receive one. You know, for using QWK.net. Or your name. Quinn Whipple.

(by the way, would that include the use of your oh-so-ironic slogan, “Your Website is in Safe Hands”?)

Here’s something else you don’t do. Don’t go to a web host review site, such as:
    http://www.hostsearchuk.com/showcomment_old.asp?companycode=209
and post a glowing review of your own company while pretending that you’re NOT the CEO, even though the company name has your initials in it.

    What a winner.

[...] Would you pick that fight? One guy apparently would. Now, maybe he started out partially in the right, even mostly in the right. But then he started hurling false accusations. And threatening frivolous lawsuits. And generally doing other things that make very little business sense. And the barbarians with racist and sexist slurs rushed in to his aid, strangely enough from his very same IP address… just minutes later. [...]
