Now this is a panel for which I have high hopes. The entire phenomenon of alternate reality gaming is a fascinating one. Watching large groups of diverse people self-organize into communities that themselves display several kinds of emergent behavior. Many hands make light work, to be sure. The applications are staggering.

Panelists:

  • Dan Hon COO, Mind Candy
  • Brian Clark Founder/CEO, GMD Studios/IndieWire
  • Evan Jones Creative Dir/Producer, Stitch Media
  • Brooke Thompson Giant Mice
  • Alice Taylor VP Digital Content, BBC

Well, high hopes are presently being dashed by the fact that web panelists seem to have NO ABILITY TO USE A MICROPHONE. It’s true that in space no one can hear you scream – but c’mon folks – this is a conference room – if you want to speak into your laptop, no one can hear your powerful insights on disintermediation and community.

Alice Taylor: They’ve been around for about 5 years and largely came out of gaming. So…What are they *for*

Dan Hon: It’s kind of like asking what books are for. It’s just another platform to tell a story, whether a product, issue, etc.

Brian Clark: in the US, the real driver is a dramatic shift in budgets (advertising, etc) towards much more intensive engagement away from mass broadcast marketing. ARG’s exist in both controlled communities (branded) as well as outside, uncontrolled forums (unfiction.com, etc)
