Off to Vegas

Sitting here at DCA, waiting for my flight to Las Vegas for Blog World Expo. A tradeshow? For blogging? Have we arrived, or is this the sign that we’re on the way out? Dunno, but at least it’s in Vegas. Perhaps this will finally kick me in the rear to get me blogging again. We’ll see.

Godspeed and good luck in your future endeavors.

Kudos, Robert. He deserves the heap of scorn. As for me, a few nasty cc’d emails to colleagues and execs were met with laughter and he finally skulked away.

If you asked around DC long enough, you’d learn that “leading a significant conservative organization” does not necessarily equal, “folks I’d love to have a drink with” – but John Berthoud would prove the exception to that rule.

Prayers and condolences to his family, John passed away today. He will be deeply missed. As the head of the National Taxpayers’ Union, John was passionate and eloquent in his defense of liberty and limited government…and on top of that, he was just a damn pile of fun. He was my friend.

He wouldn’t tell you (although everyone else might), but John carried a PhD from Yale while retaining his underlying committment to freedom. He was really a reniassiance man, talented at every turn – and he led the NTU to always carry the torch of freedom, whether to friend or foe on the Hill. If you ever wondered how far you had strayed in the pursuit of compromise, NTU under John’s leadership was there with a friendly (or pointed) reminder.

Our side could do much worse, and our country will be much worse without him.

Tell me, where can I go to get that 90 minutes back? What a painful piece of crap that movie was.

Grief

I’ve been catching it for not writing. Understood, just having trouble coming up with material, frankly.

But here’s a simple little piece of advice. If you hit your head, and I mean – really hit your head. The kind of whack that gives off a remarkably impressive, “thud”…don’t get in the car and drive two hours the next morning to see your sister the doctor and let her tell you about the concussion you gave yourself. Better to call first.

It’s no secret I’ve felt quite acutely the poison that this town can provide. I love politics, don’t get me wrong, and one of the reasons I live here is that it’s everywhere. But sometimes it can be absolutely toxic, to an extent that warps what people say, do, think, and even hope – especially when it comes to the “other side.”

Today wasn’t that day. Today I watched honesty and forthrightness shine and be recognized. Today I watched the “other side” act with graciousness and humanity.

It was a good day.

To support a friend, on my own time. It has nothing to do with my firm.
